A few thoughts and
Things you may want to consider in playing this game

Talk to the world open communication with others
Ally or treaty with others, if you can try and get in an Alliance with a Veteran, you will learn the game faster if your open to direction
Dont start out the game buying high level units you can get greater rewards buying multiple cheap units conquering more sectors that way which in turn will lead to more future units
learn the controls and use the Hot Keys they make setting your attacks that much easier, perpetual moves are a wonderful thing
Check out the message boards in Help and GT there is some good info there that may help you out if you look
try and log on everyday in the beginning it will take you no time to set your moves as the game gets older it may take over an hour to set your moves, thats even with the hot keys
and understand it takes a few worlds to get the basic understanding of the game even though it seems relatively simple
Use the boards for any questions someone will always answer
