Subject: Skirmish (anti-snowballing) Maps.....PLEASE?last

Can we please have a few small maps for some 1v1 or 2v2 even 4v4 battles?

I've brought this up before but have gotten no real feedback so I want to ask it again.  I love this unique game, but I'm getting bored with the whole snowballing thing: both on rolling over and getting rolled ends of it.

Majunga was looking like it had a great start for early fighting but noobs abandoned ship fast and now we're back to 2-3 alliances made up of the same vet players, all of which have spent weeks and will yet spend weeks running at each other just to make contact for a world ending armagedon.  With maps this big, and with the learning curve being so stiff for the new guys, it seems all maps are doomed to end this way.

I'd like to see early fighting, spend less politicing, experience more starts & finishes, observe more from other players styles, and in short, have a chance to develop more strategy.  And I'd welcome smaller and repeating maps with smaller groups of players to see it happen.

My two cents for what its worth.
this sounds like a great idea. I am new to the game and i think to force more fighting there should be a reward for enemy lands and bases that you capture. Plunder is always part of war. Also the board grids are already set up with a value you could maybe add minerals such as coal, oil, gold attached to these and make these part of the game to force player to fight over them.
Good plan.  It would take a bit of work for Johnny to implement and maintain.  All you really need though is one small map that will repeat itself every week for a new skirmish.

I'b be down for that.  And i bedt other will be to
Maybe there could be some maps with membership limited to new players, like Sandbox, but not with the 2 mo. time limit. Let those new players become experienced players together. So there would be "beginner" and "advanced" games.

Yea, I think they need more training opportunity.  As it is they start playing, see they're getting their asses handed to them, then quit.  And since a new world doesn't start for a month or so, repeat the noob trend on the next map, or outright stop playing cause its too hard.
Quick and dirty small Noob map:

Maybe if some experienced players wanted a new challenge they could assemble a ragtag bunch of noobs, mentor them and get them organized to kick other advanced players' butts. There could be endless ways to surprise and humiliate rivals with unofficial coalitions.

Its a cool thought, but the experienced players are already stretching themselves thin on live maps.  We've talked about a better tutorial too (a great idea btw), but I think it's help will be limited without giving the new players a chance to flex it by given them more games then can start and end.

There's 2 things that need to be learned in order for anyone to make it:

1) Early Land Grabbing.  Theres no use trying to study anything else if you cant do this quickly AND cheaply.

2) Smart Spawning.  Learning when and why to drop bases, when to use defenses, and how to plan CT/unit movement for a long-term result.

All the vets here have learned this through painful trial and error (lol) so I know it can be done.  My point however is that to get new players in here we need to reduce the slope on the learning curve.  Because right now, its all the same players and high turn-around noobs.

And as far as unofficial coalitions:  My experience is most players aren't willing to make additional time to organize.  Its painful enough trying to get everyone just to read the GT message boards that do exist lol.
Well, here I am as a Noob.  I have read just about all the threads and have learned alot from you old salts.  I think I am going to enjoy the hell out of this game.  Thank you all for the advice in the threads and I look forward to doing battle.
wait there is a tutorial cause I would love to go thru it if there is one could someone tell me where it is thanks

I think this would be a great idea.  If its a small 1v1 to 4v4 map i dont think  you would want anything complex at all though, i think a map of the world or something like that would complicate things drastically,

ideal situation i would love to see would just show one template, people sign up for the map but dont pick starting position.  Then for example if it was set to be a 3v3 map, everyone is randomly assigned to a team.  again obviously quitting could become a problem but i dont think it would hurt to give it a try especially if they are small maps

Also, to DZ  you can join the sandbox.  its set up for new people to play on and learn the game.  you generally wont get destroyed because people can only be on the map for a set number of days.

There are video tutorials on the right hand menu.  They helped me alot.
I agree, but a 3v3 map is like many games I have played...it should be something where you can have a 3v3v3v3 where you can have several alliances...let us jump to joining an alliance if we want.  A 10 player map will allow us to have three or so alliances in which to work together.  This also allows us to not join an alliance if we so choose not to.  Looking at all this, I have one question, can you be a part of multiple maps?  I may need to remove myself to jump to Sandbox if not.
Yes, you can join as many maps as you'd like.
Thanks, and good to know.  I was thinking it was only one map per player.  I have some learning to do and feel jumping in without knowing any of this had me in Rioja which I later learned was a Free for All.  I am going to get CREAMED...we shall see how long I last there though.
I don't know; it's not that hard to get the hang of the game. I've been playing for less than a month and I am doing reasonably well on two servers. Granted, I'm almost surely not going to win, but I'm doing well enough to not consider myself a noob. The real way to learn the game is just having an ounce of patience to actually play a long-term game in the first place and to actually be diplomatic. When starting out, talk to anybody and everybody around you. Going it alone is foolish, even in a FFA game.

Noobs just need some dedication and someone to show them some of the ropes.
Maps only tend to snowball because most countries are won or lost after the random battle when they make first contact. People never have fallbacks or decent defensive plans if the offensive goes wrong.

As for a skirmish map, I'd say that smaller maps that finish in, say, a month may be good to have to keep the site a little fresh. Of course, the bigger maps should still be around.

You bring up a good point and more questions.  How do you go about talking with those around you?  Here on the message boards?

I thank you for your experience as to your noob comment (which I did not quote).  Practice makes perfect if you have no one to show you the ropes.  I would like to ask if anyone would like to help me along the way.  I would GREATLY appreciate it.  The tutorials have helped get me started, and these boards are helping me figure some kind of strategy for which to work with (and as I mentioned, practice) and hopefully have fun.  I will check the boards almost daily and however else I can receive messages, will check that as soon as I can as well.

At the top right of the page, "Notes" are the best way to communicate with others. It's easiest just to select a country's sector in-game, click the country name, and click the leader's name to take you to the same screen with a note addressed to them. Or, if you're a member of an alliance, use the alliance forum.
